SATYAGRAHA HOUSE
Meshworks has, since 2019, worked with Voyages du Monde, as architectural consultants on their Satyagraha House property in Gardens, Johannesburg. Mahatma Ghandi lived and worked in this house from 1908 to 1909. It was designed by his friend, the architect Hermann Kallenbach. The property has operated as a guest house for international visitors to Johannesburg for many years. Understandably, such an important historical site has to be maintained and developed in the most sensitive way possible. We advise our client on the most appropriate ways forward, always respecting the original homestead and its relationship to the surrounding garden. Our heritage approach limits the impact of any built additions or alterations to the property. Most recently, we have assisted in designing and managing the installation of solar panels and water tanks in ways that substantially minimise their impact.
